Recent discussion - I am pro-gay marriage and was talking to a friend who is anti-gay marriage (and is gay, go figure). His comment was that marriage is for heteros. I said fine, don't get married, but don't you want other homos to have the choice? His response was that there is nothing you can get from marriage that you can't get in any other way.
I was a little stumped. So there are some marriage-related rights that you can set up without being married - for example, you can will your assets to your partner, rather than have them go automatically to them as your spouse.
But what are the other rights / priveleges that are lost?
Can someone give their partner the right to make healthcare decisions even though they are not legally "family"?
Can you appoint someone beneficiary of your 401K if not married?
Can you help me think of other examples?

Re: What rights are only available through marriage?
Tue, March 8, 2005 - 2:22 PMi believe visitation rights are lost since a partner would not be considered part of the immediate family. that may vary from hospital to hospital but i'm pretty sure that's the case for most.

Re: What rights are only available through marriage?
Tue, March 8, 2005 - 2:29 PMThere's the obvious Tax issue, hospital visitation rights, parental rights, pension rights. A lot of it is money based. I'm sure there would be alimony and child support issues, too.
I was searching the internet today, but I couldn't find a comprehensive list. I recall that when Melissa Ethridge visited the Daily Show, she said that there were 1138 rights that are considered marriage only, and that not even civil unions touched. -

Re: What rights are only available through marriage?
Fri, March 18, 2005 - 6:10 AMI think the largest issue is equality. Human beings which we are all part of are equal. Whether we are straight, gay, bi, or whatever, we are all equal and when you start making laws which are pointed towards one side or another then equality is throw out the window. My wife and I are both straight and it doesn't give us the right to say who you can love and who you can not. I want to see equality for our future so please fight the good fight. -

only available through marriage
Fri, April 15, 2005 - 9:39 PM"The status of heterosexual"
This is the one causes all the fuss. Marriage is the single thing that can prove you are 'straight". Not just straight as in sexual orientation, but straight and narrow.
"Oh, he's finally settled down and got married. He's no longer a rambler, that one. He must have been through rehab and found Jesus." " I bet he'll qualify for that loan now!" "His insurance will go way down."
They say it all the time; that Marriage is what keeps them from going Gay. You can hear it between the lines:
Manfred: "If I weren't married to Honey here, I'd be out gettin' blowjobs from hippies every weekend."
Honey: "Why there'd be no way for me to keep Manfred putting food in our mouths without Marriage. I see the way he eyes those tranny hookers, but with Marriage Brand Relationship, I can be secure."
Even with Marriage II, where the woman is no longer property, people depend on Marriage to keep them following the laws of the Bible. The Promise Keepers!
It's the single thing that can identify them as straight. If Sodomites could be married, that would all pass like sand through our fingers. This is why it is considered an Assault on Marriage. -

"What next? Will people be able to marry trees?"
Fri, April 15, 2005 - 9:43 PMThis, of course, would quickly occur to people who still believe in Marriage 1.0 where the woman is property.
With the gender distinction out of the way, it would be possible to marry any of your property. -

Re: "What next? Will people be able to marry trees?"
Mon, July 3, 2006 - 9:10 AM150 years ago it would have been illegal for my husband and me to marry. However, it would have been legal for him to own me. Today we are legally married and he just thinks he owns me. -
