A friend of mine told me this story tonight:
A bunch of white soldiers are having a dinner at the Legion of Honor after WW1, and a platoon of black soldiers comes in the back door, and one of them gets up and makes a speech, saying, "We're not asking for social equality, we just want to be recognized." They were immediately invited to sit at the tables and eat.
Which made me think...What would happen if gays and lesbians stated clearly that we're not asking for social equality? Would they give it to us then?

Re: Social Equality
Mon, January 2, 2006 - 1:08 PMAfter WW1 I think that was the best they could do, though a far cry from civilized. A few years ago it was the best that gays and lesbians could do to ask for protection in the charter of rights and freedoms - before that, it was Stonewall - asking just to 'be recognized'. The majority has to bo coaxed and charmed and badgered and reminded again and again that minorities are as legitimately entitled to humanity as anyone else. Slowly, the lights go on, the bigots soften (or die off), the courts and the governments come to stand up for equality and human rights. Here, incidentally is an example of why gay pride celebration is and will continue to be necessary - to continue the struggle against ignorance and intolerance.
Granted, progress can be haphazzard and rife with controversy. Liberation (of thought and society) contains the element of chaos and provocation. Embrace it - and go with love ultimately.

you're going to get social equality.
Usually, when england and canada upgrade civil rights for anybody, the US does the same, just a few years later.

Re: Social Equality
Wed, February 1, 2006 - 8:31 AMThe thing about wars is, they're rarely at their core about social issues.
They're about property. Our civil war was about money for the south more than bigotry.
And the allies would have let Hitler do what ever horrible things he wanted if he'd stayed in his own borders.
Sad but true.
And in this case, kind of encouraging. There's no mony to be lost by allowing gays to legally marry, so it won't take a war.
That said, I still support a massive joint filing of taxes by gays who view themselves as married.
Liberals today should take a cue from the past generation who actually caused trouble rather than just pontificating. -

All our politics and logistics spring from this one concept.
